Business Card Compliments Revit Resume'

A personal business (employment) card can be impressive and demonstrates a proactive, business character. Most people will invest money for a resume'; but few for a business card.

A business card format provides a
  • portable | convenient media to keep in your wallet, purse, pockets, cars
  • real-time and easy to hand out when the opportunities appear
  • great referral system for your peers; they can hand out your card for you
  • method to write short notes on the back of it when you meet potential employers
  • professional alternative to employers you meet; that don't have a business card on them. They can write down their info on the back of yours.
  • snapshot of "you" when attached to your resume' and/or cover letter.
Consider this business card checklist.

Realize, a higher quality business card will require a little more investment; but will create a better competitive impression.
  • print on a heavier white or off white card stock. It will stand out (thicker) in an employer's business card collection.
  • use one color printing, bold face your name (see example below)
  • Use two colored printing where the second color is used on the same content that you bold faced above.
  • Provide a potential employer with the quickest, most direct method of contacting you. I recommend using a cell phone number.
  • Make sure you have voice mail that is active; even if your cell phone or home phone is turned off.
  • Provide an email address. Free Email accounts are available through many providers: Google (gmail.com), Yahoo (yahoo.com), Microsoft (msn.com), etc. Make sure your email account can handle large files and has a sufficient amount of storage space.
  • Add a blog or personal website address. Some are available at no charge (free) to promote your expertise. We'll review this in another article.

Business Card Design Tips

Maintain a considerable amount of "white space" on your card. Don't jam it with too much text information.

Use easily readable fonts; the font color should contrast well against the card stock color of the business card. Set font heights, bold facing black or darker colors that draw the reader into your card.

Two color printing requires the card to be printed twice; once for each color. If your budget allows, print two colors on one face of the card, the front side.

Your goal; hand out or mail a total of 250+ business cards within 45 days or less. Call back to those recipients of your business cards within 48 hours of your engagement.

I've been unemployed at least 3 times in the last 30 years; due to bad economics in our industry. Each time, I used unique methods (like this) to contact lots of companies in a short period of time; while minimizing my upfront expenses.

Happy Trails!

Revit Jobs-Employment-Project Postings

When I started the Revit JobCaptain Blog in 2005, I included the website links to several association job boards in the right column of the home page; AIA National Career Center, AIA Chicago, etc.

Over the years I've had organizations continue to request me to list their Revit jobs, Revit BIM management positions and Revit project opportunities.

The BIM design process is creating a strain for staff resources. Its clear there are more Revit-BIM jobs than trained and/or properly trained individuals to fill positions in the BIM design process.

Considerations when responding to a Revit job opportunity:

Take time and due diligence to read, investigate and thoroughly review each Revit job post and the organization providing this position.

That also includes the staffing or recruitment agency which is advertising this position for the employer.

Initially, you should be able to investigate any job opportunity without providing sensitive personal information; like your Social Security Number (SSN), personal pictures, race, age, religious preference, etc.

A job application does not require the latter personal information and disclosure of your SSN is risky in our virtual world.

You should provide a carefully crafted, one page resume' that lists the major value points of your career. It briefly validates your experience and expertise for the Revit job posted.

I recommend sending this document in a PDF format to prevent altering or tampering of your resume'.

I welcome your feedback. I'll continue to reference and update this page in each Revit job post.
