I wrote two Revit-BIM Playbook Blog articles detailing two 3rd party Revit applications, Trelligence Affinity and WinEst Modelogix.

Both programs collect, manage and analyze a high level of project design information during a facility project's programming-conceptual phase.

The future belongs to people who can spread ideas.

Here are ten things to remember:

Create a cause. A cause seizes the moral high ground and makes people’s lives better.
Love the cause. "Evangelist" isn’t a job title. It’s a way of life. If you don’t love a cause, you can’t evangelize it.
Look for agnostics, ignore atheists. It’s too hard to convert people who deny your cause. Look for people who are supportive or neutral instead.
Localize the pain. Never describe your cause by using bull shiitake terms like "revolutionary" and "paradigm shifting." Instead, explain how it helps a person.
Let people test drive the cause. Let people try your cause, take it home, download it, and then decide if it’s right for them.

Business Cases for a Revit-BIM Transition in 2010

What are some of the significant business case points for transitioning to a Revit-BIM process?

Last week after a client principal/owner asked me this question; I decided to write down my discussion points and answers that I provide regularly.

The first question (above), usually includes one or both of these two questions;

Should I transition to Revit or AutoCAD Architecture?
Is the time right to transition to a Revit-BIM process?

As a preface to the discussion points listed below; you may want to review my Blogger Profile or my About Page on my other blog; Revit-BIM Playbook. How may this be important to the points below?

I've served our industry nationally and internationally, for more than 30 years.
My roles of corporate owner, technical trainer, educational speaker, technologist, Autodesk Reseller-trainer-consultant, production, marketing, business & technical project consultant and participating on several billion dollars of client projects produced in Revit, is a blessing that few have enjoyed.

Here’s a summary of the business case points we discussed. Granted, all of them may not apply to your situation. They may seem random, as our discussion tracked in several directions.

2009 BIM SmartMarket Report | The Business Value of BIM: The 50-page 2009 McGraw-Hill 2009 BIM SmartMarket report confirms the growth of the BIM process from facility owner to designers to contractors. The first report was released in 2007.

Revit-Based Design Firms Work Well Together: Looking for more business? As Revit-BIM processes have evolved, design firms and contractors have made the investment; they now seek companies that are using a similar Revit-BIM process.

Principals-Managers-Owners have found the Revit-BIM process intriguing, as more of them seek access into the Revit-BIM project than CAD files.

Cross-Grade AutoCAD Licenses to Revit: A Revit Architecture Suite includes AutoCAD or AutoCAD Architecture (ADT). Personally, I see this as Autodesk’s means of helping folks transition to a full Revit BIM process by using your existing AutoCAD licensing.

Revit is a more complete platform product; that includes individual, discipline-specific software for Architecture, Structural, and MEP. One platform for all disciplines

Large Revit Projects: There are a significant number of large, multi-year design projects in process; that are using Revit as part of their design tools; like the Freedom Tower in New York.

Revit Add-On Software: Consider the evolving suite of specialized, task specific Revit add-on products for cost estimating, fabrication, energy analysis, construction specifications and design.

BIM vs Object-based CAD: The Revit platform is Autodesk’s evolving comprehensive BIM platform; where AutoCAD Architecture has served as their object-based product for Architecture & MEP.

IFC Replaces DXF File Exchange: Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) file format is evolving as "the new DXF" for exchanging BIM project files and providing BIM Deliverables.

BIM/IPD Process Contracts: AIA and AGC have contract formats specifically for BIM and/or IPD process-based design projects.

BIM Builders: Contractors have become one of the fastest growing shareholders to use a BIM process. On a complete BIM project, the contractor is involved earlier in the design process. I’m working with architects that are working on projects; where the contractor invited the architect-engineer into the project.

Revit-BIM Construction Specifications: E-Specs has become a significant software to connect specifications to the Revit-BIM model. Their patented process connects the MasterSpec to the BIM model components.

Revit-BIM Construction Estimating: More than 4 major estimating packages now link to the BIM model for estimating.

Discipline Specific BIM Models: Architects, Structural and MEP Engineers each build model specific to their discipline. They link their models together while coordinating their disciplines. As software and systems develop; individual discipline specific modeling may evolve to a single model or something completely different. After all, how many people foresaw the use of XREFs, Paper Space, Tool Palettes, Sheet Set Manager, Block Editor, Auto-scaling Text, etc when they were using AutoCAD Version 9? The tools will evolve around the process.

Collaboration Tools BIM Viewers: A generic BIM viewer called NavisWorks, allows users to view BIM models, connect them to Project Management and Estimating systems…and performs clash-interference detection of multi-discipline components.

Job Sites: Construction job trailers are evolving into Revit-BIM Model Review Trailers on construction sites. Yes, sub-contractors and fabricators are providing models to the general contractors prior to delivery and installation. GCs review their models prior to what is becoming "Just In Time" product delivery-installation to the construction site.

International BIM User-Community Websites: Currently, RevitCity has 110,000+ global Revit members. The number of architects-engineers-contractors-owners that participate in AUGI-Revit Forums, Autodesk University, RevitCommunity, Revit Blogs are growing exponentially. These are unprecedented resources to help transition your company to a Revit-BIM process.

Unprecedented access to pre-built Revit-BIM component libraries: Sweets, McGraw Hill-Reed Construction Data, CADDetails and Autodesk SEEK are just a few sites that provide thousands of Revit-BIM 3D Manufacturers' building components for a BIM design process.

Design Analysis; structural, energy, code, space, mep, etc are conducted real time to simulate the life cycle of the building during design process of BIM models.

Federal (GSA), States (Wisconsin, Texas) now require BIM deliverables on certain size projects.

Academics: More than 90+ accredited architectural-engineering colleges are teaching, a Revit-BIM process in their graduate programs.

Bidding for Graduate Talent: Finding, attracting and hiring better talent from these schools will be difficult if your organization is not USING these tools, as graduates are working in BIM…not CAD.

Professional Associations: AIA, CSI, AGC, ALA and local AIA chapters have focused heavily on the BIM process for their education credits; so their members can prosper under a BIM process-based facility design.

The business case points to transition to a Revit-BIM process in 2010 are overwhelming, unprecedented and can't be done overnight by simply purchasing software. Begin your planning now for the new year.

Create and leverage 3-D models for the following

Support business development
Utilize visualization techniques and tools to assist in design visualization
Perform design assistance and constructability reviews
Incorporate construction means and methods
Integrate with project schedules to simulate project sequencing
Coordinate site logistics, site utilization and underground utilities
Coordinate all project systems and components
Extract quantities to assist estimating and procurement
Communicate layout with survey crews and craft workers
Generate as built documentation to support operations and maintenance

Requirements:

Practical experience with: Revit, AutoCAD/ADT, Microstation/Triforma, and/or Archicad/Constructor
Familiarity with coordination and visualization software such as Navisworks, SketchUp, and/or VIZ/MAX
B.S. or B.A. degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management
Prefer a minimum of 3 years in the design and commercial construction industry
Ability to work at various project sites within the Puget Sound Region

BIM Manager Job | Mortenson Construction | Seattle Washington

The BIM Manager is responsible for providing input and leadership to the design and/or virtual design and construction process.

Understands technical and planning attributes of specific building types.
Provides meaningful input to the project’s programming and conceptual design activities.
Coordinates design team members and preconstruction services (i.e. estimating, scheduling, project planning, constructability, site utilization, etc.).
When necessary, manages the integrated delivery team’s resources.
Oversees the preparation of models for facilities management.

Qualifications:

Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent management and leadership skills
Strong understanding of construction processes
Facilitator of project collaboration and integrated delivery activities
Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize
Moderate experience with and demonstrated knowledge of construction costs and financial risks; strong understanding of the things that impact cost
Demonstrated basic understanding of A/E business and client’s business interest.
Experience managing people and processes.
Familiar with contract language – construction and A/E

Basic Responsibilities:

Oversees the production and management of 3D models
Establishes the scope of work for projects
Establishes the schedule and deliverables for integrated delivery services
Oversees construction coordination
Communicates model generated information to project team
Implements 3D technology during construction
Participates in the research and development of new technologies
Internal training
Develops project BIM models
Attends, participates and presents at conferences
Manages others
Business Development support
May lead the Operating Group Integrated Construction team.

Minimum Software proficiencies:

High level of competency with advanced software. (2D and 3D AutoCAD minimum)
Proficiency with Autodesk Architectural Desktop (ADT), Autodesk Building Systems (ABS), Autodesk Revit or Graphisoft Constructor preferred.

Additional Software proficiencies:

Navisworks, Primavera, and 3DS Max or Viz.
Animation experience a plus

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or higher education from an accredited college or university in the team member’s professional field (Architecture, Engineering, and/or Construction Management).
A minimum of 8 years of progressively more challenging commercial construction management experience or equivalent combining education and experience.
Licensure in professional field is recommended.
